Chapter Seven

An hour later, Isabeau tried to ignore the pleasant weight of Gray’s hand at the small of her back. The touch was distracting, to say the least. If she didn’t pay attention, she’d trip on the stairs leading up to Mariner’s Fish Fry and fall flat on her face.

“Inside or out?”

She blinked. She’d been so preoccupied with his hand, she hadn’t noticed they’d entered the restaurant. “Sorry?”

His smile made her blush. He’d obviously noticed her inattention. Did he realize the cause?

“Do you want to get a table inside or out on the deck?”

“Outside, definitely.” The deck at Mariner’s was one of her favorite spots to eat.

They followed Katelyn Sullivan, the owner’s daughter, out back to a cozy spot against the rail. Since they’d come specifically for their famous lobster rolls, Katelyn took their orders and was away in a flash.

“This is nice.” Isabeau soaked up the atmosphere. The twinkling Christmas lights added a magical glow. A slight breeze off the bay caressed her face. “Stanley brought me here when I first got into town. I’ve been coming back ever since. Their blueberry pie, c’est magnifique.”

“We used to come here too when I was in high school. Did you and Uncle Stan go out often?” Gray’s voice sounded stiff.

Even before he’d found the picture, she’d sensed he didn’t like talking to her about Stanley. Each time they did, he acted strange. She couldn’t imagine why.

“He was always very kind to me. I owe him more than I can say. Your uncle was a very special man.”

He nodded. “I agree.”

“He talked of you often. You’re lucky you never came to visit. He was determined to set us up. I hope it doesn’t embarrass you to know he sang your praises every chance he had. He was very proud of you.”

Was that a blush?

“He was like a father to me. Far better than my own ever was. Did he tell you he took me in when I was sixteen?”

“Yes. He wished you were his own son. That he could have raised you and your sister from when you were babies.”

A suspicious glint of moisture shown in Gray’s eyes. She could have imagined it, the moment was gone so quick—but she didn’t think so.

“Him and me, both.”

“He cherished the time he did have. He only mentioned your sister a few times. I think his inability to help her with her difficulties saddened him.” Why the sudden urge to talk about Stanley when the topic was so obviously painful for him? She hoped he wanted to open up to her again, like he had the other day with regards to his sister. Since he’d found the picture of her and Stanley, the air between them had been filled with tension. The strain had begun to wear on her.

Gray leaned back in his chair to let the waitress place their orders on the table.

The delicious aroma of lobster drenched in butter made her stomach growl. She could only hope he hadn’t heard. She took a hearty bite, closing her eyes in bliss.
